Tribal Bellydance with Dark Side Tribal Shaping Our Space: Incorporating Veil into Tribal Improv
23 October, 1:00-3:00pm at Synergy RaD
Veilwork is one of the most magical elements of bellydance: the veil gives structure to the empty space around the dancer, while hiding, highlighting, or even creating the shapes of the dancer's body and movements. Yet veil technique is seldom used in American Tribal Style bellydance and other tribal improv formats. Well, we can have our veils and do tribal improv too! In this workshop, we introduce veilwork as a layering technique to incorporate into your tribal improv and fusion bellydance. How do you do veilwork in a "tribal" way? For that matter, how do you even tell what improv cues your fellow dancers are giving when you're all holding veils? We'll answer these questions and more through exploration of several concepts: concealing or revealing the body, camouflaging or amplifying movements, and understanding the nature of your prop. We'll apply all of these concepts in a short ATS-based veil choreography to put everything together. You will need a 3-yard rectangular veil (silk is best if you have it) for this workshop; some familiarity with ATS or other tribal improv format is recommended but not required.
About Dark Side Tribal: Dark Side Tribal was founded in Bloomington, IN, in 2006 by three dancers with a shared passion for American Tribal Style and tribal fusion bellydance, and a shared mission to build a vibrant tribal community in southern Indiana. DST draws on the collective dance backgrounds of all current members to incorporate elements of raks sharki, folkloric bellydance, ballet, modern, hip hop, Bollywood, and West African dance into their own unique tribal fusion style, while always remaining true to their foundation in improvisation-based American Tribal Style bellydance. Dark Side Tribal offers regular ATS classes and hosts tribal bellydance events in Bloomington, as well as handcrafting costume and body care items to delight every dancer, for sale in their Etsy shop.
